Question:
“Gary, I’m going to xeriscape the front of my house to conserve water and lower my water bill. How much value do you think that will add?”
Answer:
[Note: Xeriscaping is landscaping that needs little or no watering by using less-thirsty plants like cacti and succulents.]First, I highly commend you for conserving water.
However, you may have heard me say this before:
“People buy on emotion and justify with logic.”
While saving money and conserving water have LOGICAL appeal, they can’t match the EMOTIONAL appeal of a green lawn, attractive shrubs, and colorful flowers.
So, by all means, go ahead with your xeriscape.
But know that unless the end result is exceedingly well done and attractive, it likely will slightly decrease your home’s value.
