Question:
“Our family is growing and we’re running out of space. We’re expecting our third child and we’re trying to decide if should stay and add-on or sell and move up. What advice can you give us?”
Answer:
My best advice is to ask yourself these questions:
- Do you love where you live? Does your current neighborhood still fit your needs for work, friends, schools, activities, etc.? Or would you prefer another area?
- Would you be overbuilding for your area—something that could hurt you for later resale? Or would you be catching up with the neighborhood? Is the whole neighborhood improving, or would it be just you?
- If you’d be adding “out”, is there enough yard or would you have little yard left?
- Would an add-on capture a view, which would be a “windfall” benefit (and increase in your home value)?
- Are you prepared to live through months of construction or potentially move out and live elsewhere for a while?
Feel free to call me if you’d like the name of a good contractor and/or would like to talk with me about the value of your home and finding a new home…
