This week’s crazy building is Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
This unusual structure consists of three massive building columns, with a long, thin roof section reminiscent of a flattened cruise ship perched across the top. According to the designer, famous architect Moshe Safdie, it was inspired by by a deck of cards. Due both to the prime real estate and its unique design, Marina Bay Sands cost $4.7 billion to build, making it one of the most expensive buildings on earth.
The building was constructed in 2010 as an enormous luxury resort, which includes one of the most profitable casinos in the world. It was built by Las Vegas Sands, a firm known for such projects as the Venetian and the Palazzo.
The roof section, known as the SkyPark, houses restaurants, gardens and an infinity pool nearly 500 feet long. This structure sets another world record: largest public cantilever with an observation deck.
In a city-country that has become known for its opulence, Marina Bay Sands is a weird yet wonderfully extravagant crown jewel.
