Question:
“A friend of the family just got a real estate license, so we’re going to have him sell our home.”
Answer:
This reminds me of what I call the “Golden Ticket Syndrome.”
Remember Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?
If you had a Golden Ticket you got the grand tour of Willy’s candy factory and all kinds of “marvelous surprises.”
The “Golden Ticket Syndrome” is when people assume that a realty license automatically includes marvelous surprises like knowledge, skill, and experience.
Unfortunately, real estate isn’t like that. All you can assume if someone has a “golden” real estate license is it’s probably LEGAL for them to sell real estate.
Sadly, that’s about it.
So, while it would be very nice for you to be a guinea pig for your friend, you’d probably be better off giving them $10,000 in cash and hiring a successful agent to sell your home.
Make sense?
(Okay, you’re thinking I’m only writing this because I fancy myself successful. Am I right? Well, sure, I’d love for them to have me sell their home. But I really do mean this, no matter what agent they choose.)
