The Light Cathedral was an installation featured at the 2012 Ghent Light Festival. But although this was only a temporary feature of the city’s landscape, it left a lasting memory among those who experienced it.
Luminarie de Cagna, an Italian family lighting business dating back to 1930, is responsible for this amazing structure. Rising nearly 100 feet into the air, it’s festooned with 55,000 LED bulbs of many different colors. The resulting effect is something reminiscent of a Vegas casino: a cathedral gallery illuminated with a near-blinding palette of rainbow hues.
Remarkably, thanks to the efficiency of the LEDs, the Light Cathedral used only 20 kWh of electricity over the course of 4 evenings. For comparison, an average American home might use roughly 60 kWh in 4 nights. Not too shabby!
