Question:
“My husband and I have never bought a home before. I’m a full-time nurse and I’m thinking about getting a real estate license so I can get the commission when we buy. Do you think that’s a good idea?”
Answer:
Your question is a different version of what I call the “Golden Ticket Syndrome.”
Do you remember “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?” In it, all you needed was to find a lucky golden ticket and you got a tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and a lifetime supply of candy!
However, a real estate license is no golden ticket.
It doesn’t magically impart upon you the knowledge, skill, or experience you need to buy a home, let alone help someone else buy or sell one.
But, you say, you will learn what you need when you take the necessary courses for your license, right?
Not exactly.
For whatever reason, those courses are chock full of useless trivia and real estate theory, but sorely lacking hands-on practical information.
So don’t waste your time getting a license and hiring a green agent (you) who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Instead, scrap the golden ticket idea and find yourself a professional, experienced agent to represent you. You won’t pocket the fee, but you’ll be miles ahead and have a much better result!
