This week’s crazy building is the Ministry of Transportation Building in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Completed in 1975 in Soviet Georgia, this amazing work of Brutalist architecture looks something like a 3D tic-tac-toe board. It consists of several crisscrossing prisms of steel and concrete—three vertical, five horizontal.
The architect for the project was also the main client: George Chakhava, the Deputy Minister of Highway Construction.
He wanted to create something that would exist in harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. By putting the building on “stilts,” he allowed plants and animals to thrive all around the base of the building.
In 2007 the building was bought by the Bank of Georgia and now serves as their official headquarters. Ironic, considering its Communist origins!
