This week’s crazy building is the Mushroom House in La Jolla, CA.
The official name of this strange structure is the Pavilion, but it’s been nicknamed the Mushroom House due to its distinctive shape.
Way back in 1960, Sam Bell of Bell’s Potato Chips bought a summer home on the cliffs above Black’s Beach. Realizing that his property extended all the way down to the beach below, he hired architect Dale Naegle to build this guest house in 1968.
Also remarkable is the 300-foot tramway that extends up the cliffside, linking the two buildings.
The home is a hidden San Diego gem, accessible only at low tide by trekking over rocky terrain.
