This strange and stark-looking structure looks like a surreal, topsy-turvy office building. In truth, it’s one of many oddly alien World War II monuments that dot the countryside of Eastern Europe.
Built in 1981, it was dedicated to 300 Serbian peasants who gave up their lives attacking the militia of the fascist Croatian government, using only pitchforks.
Built with concrete and steel, the Petrova Gora Monument contained a museum dedicated to the region’s struggle for freedom. Today, however, the building is abandoned and in heavy disrepair. People have even stolen some of the steel plates that make up the facade.
A movement is currently underway to restore the monument. Hopefully it catches on!
