Buying a San Diego home? Search all homes for sale
Welcome back to another edition of my Story Time With Gary series. The story I have to tell today comes from when I was just getting started in the business, about 30 years ago.
A few other agents and I were trying to help a developer find lots that he could build condos on. This developer was a very tough, intimidating guy. He had massive forearms and chewed a cigar. We didn’t quite trust him, so we would never give him the address of any property we found or bid on. We would have him make offers without knowing the address. Usually, this isn’t a big deal.
However, one time we found a property for him and made an offer. Someone else then made an offer, and we engaged in a back and forth bidding war with this other buyer. The price kept going up, and one day the developer called us into his office. He looked angry.
We came in and sat down. He said, “This property you were bidding on? The other buyer was me!” He actually had another agent bidding on properties for him and didn’t realize that both of us were bidding on the same property. He ended up bidding against himself! “Bidding against yourself” is usually just a metaphor, but it was literal in this case.
He was literally bidding against himself.
