Buying a San Diego home? Search all homes for sale
It’s time for another edition of “Story Time With Gary.” My story today is from all the way back in the 1980s. Back then, it wasn’t uncommon for the buyer’s agent to present the buyer’s offer to the seller and the seller’s agent. What was uncommon, however, was for the buyer to insist on presenting their offer themselves. We had a buyer do this once, but it wasn’t all they did.
The buyer presented the offer to myself and the seller and said he would pay our full asking price – in gemstones. He also told us that if our attorney or CPA reviewed the offer and said it wasn’t legal, he would sue them.
This was a strange, agitated, and forceful manner in which to present an offer. We politely listened to the buyer, received his offer, and quickly agreed that we wanted nothing more to do with him.

This was a strange way to present an offer.

It turns out that this guy was actually running a scam. Gemstones can have value on paper, but a lot of times they are bought up for 10 cents on the dollar. It probably won’t happen to you, but if anyone tries to buy your home with gemstones, please show them the door.
If you have any questions for me or if you’re looking to buy or sell a home in San Diego, give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.
