The NASA Vehicle Assembly Building, located in Titusville, Florida has appeared as a backdrop in such movies as Apollo 13 and Contact. At 526 feet tall it is America’s tallest building outside of an urban area and it is one of the largest buildings in the world by volume at 129,428,000 cubic feet. It is so large, that on humid days, clouds will form just under the ceiling. Fortunately, with 10,000 tons of air conditioning equipment, all of the air inside can be replaced in just one hour!
The American flag painted on the exterior was the largest in the world when it was originally added in 1976 and required 6,000 gallons of paint to complete. Each star is 6 feet across and the stripes are 9 feet wide. The blue area is the same size as a basketball court!
When a spacecraft has been assembled, it is boarded onto the crawler. Aptly named, it moves at a pace of 1 mile per hour and only moves 42 feet per gallon of fuel! It can position the craft for launch at an accuracy of one inch. The doors which it drives through are the largest in the world at 456 feet high and take 45 minutes to open or close.
