Buying a San Diego home? Search all homes for sale
Have you ever tried so hard to save money that you ended up losing money? Let me tell you a story about a couple who did just that.
I’ve known this couple for many years, and at the time, they wanted to sell their home. They proudly said, “We’re going to sell it on our own.” They figured that they could save money without the expense of hiring a real estate agent.
After awhile, I checked in with them to see how they were doing and if they had succeeded in selling their house. The wife told me happily, “Yes! We sold it for $490,000!”
The thing was, I had actually sold the same model of home about a block away from theirs for $575,000. I actually responded, “Was that all you got?” Her voice changed after I said that; I don’t even think she realized how much money they left on the table.
“They tried so hard to save money on their home by not hiring a real estate agent that they sold their home well under market value.”
They tried so hard to save money on their home by not hiring a real estate agent that they sold their home well under market value. On top of that, they had to do all of the work themselves, and who knows how much liability they had. I’m sure they didn’t do all the disclosures and things they were supposed to do, among other things.
The bottom line is when you hire a real estate agent, yes, it costs money. But you do get something for it; typically, working with an agent results in a higher price and a good service done. An agent can help handle the transaction and the paperwork, and if they’re an experienced agent with a strong track record, then you’ll get an even better result.
Don’t lose money trying to save money. Hire a good agent when you’re trying to sell your home.
On the note of hiring a good agent, if you have questions or want to buy or sell a home, feel free to give me a call. I’d be happy to help you out.
