Must a seller accept the highest offer they receive on their home? Here’s my answer.

Does a seller have to sell to the person making the highest offer?
I hear this question all the time, and the answer is no. The seller can choose an offer based on whatever criteria they want; they can even choose the lowest offer available (which isn’t advisable, but is possible).

Usually, it comes down to a combination of who offers the highest price, who has the strongest financing, which offer has an escrow period that works, and other miscellaneous features. They will, however, accept the highest offer made about 80% of the time.
