The Beijing National Stadium or Bird’s Nest as locals call it makes a bold statement. The 2.7 million square foot structure was enthusiastically embraced by the public when it opened in 2008. New engineering software was created to make the unique twisted steel exterior possible.
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Bird’s Nest won out over 13 other submissions. The architects didn’t even think they would win and only found out about the competition for entries days before the deadline.
The unusual structure’s gaps allow for natural ventilation and a translucent membrane keeps it waterproof.
Unfortunately, this costly superstructure has fallen into disuse over recent years. With a hefty maintenance cost of $11 million per year, that’s understandable! However, the 2022 Olympic games are planned to be held there (as well as locations in Yanquing and Zhangjiakou) so it sounds like this empty nest will be full once again.
