The John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia is reminiscent of dominos, probably due to its repeating forms. Designed by architecture firm Lyons, this modern building screams high-tech.
Its sinuous form was inspired by the double helix structure of DNA. Features like the name, cut from concrete, and concrete panels with abstract molecules and DNA strands add to the high-tech ambiance.
Some of the focus areas for the Lyons architecture firm are research facilities and specialist laboratories so they were a natural choice for the building.
A lot of thought was put into the development of the School so it could seamlessly combine spaces for research, exhibitions, and a public lecture hall.
Construction had to be completed in phases over 7 years due to ongoing research.
