The Agora Theater in Lelystad, Netherlands combines bright colors with unusual geometry for a unique effect.
Designed by UNStudio their goal was to create a space as individual as the theater. It serves a practical purpose as well, inside are 2 auditoriums which had to be spaced as far apart as possible so one performance will not disturb the other. The strange geometry also serves to mask the theater equipment by incorporating a sloped roof instead of a squared-off rise at one end.
UNStudio said this was one of their most challenging projects and resulted in more creative solutions. One of those being a bright pink handrail that wraps around the foyer and seems to change color as it goes.
The auditorium is an eye-catching bright red color, not just the seats but the whole space. Here too the exterior geometry is echoed in the walls.
One of the architect’s goals was to create a space where people stay longer and it looks like they have achieved it with the Agora Theater.
