Not a spaceship, the Earthships are green homes built from recycled materials.
Created by Michael Reynolds in Taos, New Mexico, the original concept was to take readily available waste materials such as tires, bottles, cans, and scrap metal to create a home.
He has evolved the concept over the last 40 years. Now they can maintain a constant temperature year-round in any climate without burning wood or fossil fuel. This is achieved through the use of thermal mass walls and solar gain.
Other features include: solar and wind electricity, water harvesting, contained sewage treatment, and even food production.
On their campus you can take a tour, stay overnight in an Earthship, and even join their academy and learn how to make one of these unique homes yourself!
