Question:
“We’ve made a New Year’s resolution to buy a home in 2020. What should we start to think about before we buy?”
Answer:
I’m excited for you! So excited, I’ll share with you my quick stream-of-consciousness:
- Are your job and life stable enough to take on this responsibility right now?
- What monthly payment are you comfortable with?
- Have you talked with a lender to determine your price range? (We can recommend one to you.)
- Have you found a good Realtor? (Hint: we can help you!)
- Where do you want to live? What do you need to live near? Work…family…church…schools…?
- Do you want a house, townhome, condo, or perhaps even a duplex? (The first home my wife and I owned was a duplex and it was a great decision.)
- How much space do you need and why?
- What do you need in a home?
- What amenities would be a plus?
- Do you want a move-in ready home or are you OK with a fixer-upper (benefits: lower price, able to put your own stamp on the home.)
- If you can’t find what you want, what will you be flexible on (property type, size, condition, location, amenities, etc.)?
- When do you want to move in?
