City Heights

City Heights is a heavily populated neighborhood that lies slightly inland but is still close to the coastal and metropolitan San Diego communities. The terrain of the area is flat and high to the northwest, with lower altitudes and interspersed canyons as one moves to the southeast. The area has undergone redevelopment over the past 20 years; crime rates have dropped considerably and many new public facilities have been constructed.

University Ave. and El Cajon Blvd. are great places to go for shopping in the area. There you’ll also find plenty of exotic foods, such as Asian specialty markets and restaurants serving up various African cuisines. Several parks in the area, such as the Azalea and City Heights recreation centers, offer a wide variety of amenities, including playgrounds, athletic fields, gymnasiums, and art classes. Just southeast of City Heights lies Chollas Lake, a picturesque spot for jogging, biking, and picnicking. Balboa Park’s famous zoo and multitude of museums are also close by to the west. The region also has a large number of grade schools, and SDSU is located just a few minutes to the north.

The 15 and 805 freeways are located along City Heights’ western border, and the 8 and 94 freeways are also close by. The area’s population tends to consist of lower-income families and has a high proportion of children. Houses tend to be small, and rents in the region are very low. If you’re looking for a neighborhood with inexpensive residences and a unique cultural flavor, look no further than City Heights. By Gary Kent
