San Carlos

San Carlos is a small suburb of San Diego that is located somewhat inland but remains in fairly close proximity the more urban coastal neighborhoods. It is divided by a mountain and a lake into two distinct segments, which are connected by Navajo Road and Jackson Drive. Its terrain is hilly in its western segment, but mostly flat to the east.

What’s Cool About San Carlos

Along Navajo and Jackson one can find much of the San Carlos’s shopping and dining options, including the San Carlos and Navajo shopping centers. Mission Trails Golf Course lies near the area’s center, and a few small parks are also available. By far the most prominent feature, however, is the massive Mission Trails Regional Park. This park includes Lake Murray to the south, where one can enjoy fishing, jogging, biking, picnics, and a host of other activities. To the north, one can climb Cowles Mountain and hike or bike along the 40 miles of surrounding trails. There are also two colleges fairly close to San Carlos: Grossmont just to the east in El Cajon, and SDSU in College Grove to the south.

The 125 Freeway serves borders San Carlos to the east, and the I-8 is not far to the south, so one is never too far from the rest of the city. Area residents tend to be older and are often married. Most own single family residences, which are generally medium-large in size. San Carlos is well-suited to those looking for a suburb with a relaxed, rural feel that can still offer the comforts of city life. By Gary Kent
