Cardiff by the Sea
Like its namesake—Cardiff, the capital of Wales—Cardiff by the Sea is a beautiful community located right on the ocean. Most of this small but lively area is located on high ground that offers scenic views to the south, east and west. On the coast, staircases descend to meet over two miles of beaches that attract surfers countywide.

What’s Cool About Cardiff by the Sea
Along the area’s southern rim lies the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve, which boasts five miles of hiking trails from which nature lovers can enjoy over 300 species of birds. South Coast Highway 101 skims right along the coast, making for a scenic Sunday drive, Glen Park offers basketball, tennis and volleyball, while Cardiff Sports Park to the east has fields for baseball and soccer. When residents’ stomachs start rumbling, they head down to Restaurant Row for the great Mexican and Californian cuisine and the exquisite ocean panoramas. For a glimpse of the region’s local flavor, look no further than the bronze surfer statue known as the Cardiff Kook, which residents dress up in costumes ranging from “hula dancer” to “Santa Claus.”
Cardiff is bordered by Encinitas to the north, Solana Beach to the south, and Rancho Santa Fe to the east. Interstate 5 runs through the heart of town for easy travel to down into the more central San Diego neighborhoods. Residents tend to be roughly of middle age, and houses in the area are fairly large, with about 3 bedrooms on average. While Cardiff may be small, it has a relaxed ambience and sense of community that put most other urban neighborhoods to shame. By Gary Kent
