Solana Beach
Solana Beach is a small but populous beach town located in northern San Diego. “Solana” is Spanish for a suntrap, or a sheltered yet sunny place, and this perfectly captures the area’s atmosphere. There are gently rolling hills to the east, and the western portion of the region sits on a plateau, creating steep cliffs along the shoreline that boast spectacular ocean views.

What’s Cool About Solana Beach
Solana Beach’s coastline is often found at the bottom of the cliffs, so staircases descend to the diverse and enchanting beaches—some secluded, others brimming with surfers, swimmers and sunbathers. Fletcher Cove Park is a great community center right by the sea, and San Dieguito Park further inland provides plenty of room for sports and picnicking. Solana Beach is bordered to the north by San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve, where one can see hundreds of bird species and other wildlife along the hiking trails. Right at the area’s southern border lies the excitement of Del Mar, including the ever-popular racetrack and fairgrounds. After an invigorating day enjoying the city, residents may want to dine at one of the neighborhood’s acclaimed eateries—maybe a delicious French crepe at the Orange Blossom Café, or some authentic New York-style pizza at Bongiorno’s.
The Interstate 5 runs north to south straight through the center of Solana Beach, making travel to Encinitas and Cardiff to the north and central San Diego to the south a breeze. A high proportion of the area’s residents are prosperous professionals aged 25 and above. From their lofty vantage point, houses along the coast look out onto gorgeous seascapes. Solana Beach may be located a bit north of San Diego’s heart, but residents will never be lacking in fresh and interesting activities. By Gary Kent
