Rancho Peñasquitos (often abbreviated “PQ”) is a wealthy, primarily residential area located a bit north of central San Diego. “Peñasquitos” is Spanish for “little crags,” and accordingly the area has numerous valleys and hills, culminating in the impressive Black Mountain to the north.

What’s Cool About Rancho Penasquitos
PQ is home to several small parks, including the Hilltop and Canyonside recreation centers and a skate park. The most distinctive features of the area, however, are the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve to the south and the Black Mountain Open Space Park to the north. Both are ideal places for hiking and discovering the local wildlife, and the latter is also great for biking and horseback riding. PQ’s residents create an elaborate holiday light display known as “Christmas Card Lane” each December, and the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos street fair is held each May. While the neighborhood is located slightly inland, it is still only 15-minute drive to the ocean. There is also a wide selection of grade schools in the area.

The 56 Freeway runs east to west through the center of PQ, and the I-15 runs along its eastern border. The population is fairly well-educated and includes a high proportion of married couples with children. Homes in the area are recently-built and tend to be quite spacious. All in all, Rancho Peñasquitos is an excellent balance between accessibility to urban and coastal areas and a quiet, upscale suburban atmosphere. By Gary Kent
