Point Loma
Point Loma is a large coastal San Diego neighborhood that stretches from northeast to southwest, then south into a long peninsula. When Juan Cabrillo landed here in 1542, it marked the first time any European set foot on the American west coast. Due to its hilly, high-altitude terrain, the area has extensive and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay, the surrounding city, and even Mexico in the distance.

What’s Cool About Point Loma
Beaches in Point Loma can be difficult to access due to the prevalence of cliffs, but Ocean Beach just to the north offers sun, surf, and sand to spare. The tiny Shelter Island toward the area’s center provides a haven for three yacht clubs and contains several fine restaurants. The San Diego Sports Arena and Soma to the northeast host concerts and a variety of other events. Nearby Liberty Station has finally come into its own, boasting entertainment, dining and shopping—including the thriving Liberty Public Market.
The southern half of Point Loma’s peninsula is home to two distinctive landmarks: the Point Loma Lighthouse and the Cabrillo National Monument. Several celebrations are held each year, including the Day at the Docks in April and the Cabrillo Festival in October. Notable neighborhood schools include High Tech High, known for its innovative project-based learning program, and the beautiful coastally-located Point Loma Nazarene University.
While Point Loma’s peninsula is a bit out of the way, its northeast corner has access to the 5 and 8 freeways. The neighborhood’s population tends to be prosperous and married, and includes many retirees. The area’s homes are spacious and often include gorgeous views. Point Loma is perfect for those who treasure natural beauty and a relaxing environment. By Gary Kent
